A rich, decadent dessert with a striking dark color and velvety texture, enhanced by cream cheese frosting.

Ingredients

  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1½ cups sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ¾ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • Black gel food color (as needed)
  • 1 cup cream cheese (softened)
  • ½ cup butter (softened)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and cocoa powder in a large bowl.
  3. Mix the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla extract, white vinegar, and black gel food color in another bowl until smooth.
  4. Combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  5. Divide the batter evenly into the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes.
  6. Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
  7. Prepare the frosting by beating the cream cheese and butter until smooth, then gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla.
  8. Frost the cooled cakes with the cream cheese frosting as desired.
  9. Decorate with chocolate shavings or sprinkles and enjoy!

Notes

For a richer flavor, use Dutch-processed cocoa powder. Store leftover cake in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
