Delightfully spooky Halloween cupcakes with a chocolatey base and festive decorations, perfect for any gathering.

Ingredients

  • 1 box chocolate cupcake mix (plus ingredients required on package: usually eggs, oil, and water)
  • 1 batch of buttercream frosting
  • Black food coloring (for the frosting)
  • Red food coloring (to create ‘blood’)
  • POP ROCKS candy (for a fun, popping effect)
  • Candy eyeballs or gummy candies (for that spooky look)
  • Plastic skeleton hands (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to the temperature instructed on the cupcake box. In a mixing bowl, prepare the cupcake batter according to the package instructions, mixing until smooth.
  2. Line a muffin tin with cupcake liners and fill each liner about two-thirds full with the batter. Bake in the preheated oven for the time specified on the box, usually around 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  3. Remove the cupcakes from the oven. Allow them to cool in the tin for about 5 minutes, and then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  4. Add black food coloring to your buttercream frosting. Stir until you achieve a deep, dark color.
  5. Use a spatula or piping bag to frost each cupcake generously with the black buttercream.
  6. Mix red food coloring with a little water to create a drizzling sauce. Use a spoon to drizzle it over the frosted cupcakes to give the appearance of spooky ‘blood.’
  7. Sprinkle POP ROCKS candy on top for an exciting crunch. Finish by placing candy eyeballs or gummy candies onto each cupcake.
  8. Place plastic skeleton hands on top of the cupcakes for a creepy effect. Serve immediately or store as instructed.

Notes

Don’t overmix the batter and check for doneness before the suggested baking time to avoid overbaking.
